A good composite door should do three things: keep the weather out, keep the house secure, and still look right in five years. Most fail on the third. Here's what separates a door you'll be happy with from one you'll want to replace.
The core matters. Cheap composite doors use a hollow or foam-filled core that warps in direct sun. A solid timber-core composite — like the Distinction range we fit — stays stable through hot summers and cold winters. It also locks better because the multi-point mechanism screws into solid material.
Glass is another differentiator. Decorative glass with lead effect looks good from the street but can let in less clear light than a simple obscure panel. If you want a bright hallway, ask for a door with clear or frosted glass sidelights instead of a fully decorated panel.
Colour fast-fading is a real problem with some budget ranges. Navy and dark green are the worst offenders — they can show fading within 2–3 years. The better manufacturers use through-colour skins that stay consistent. It costs more upfront but saves a replacement.
Finally, check the threshold. A high threshold is a trip hazard and a barrier for wheelchair users. Low-threshold options exist and are worth asking about, especially for front doors where the step down to the path is already tight.
