If your conservatory is too hot in summer and too cold in the rest of the year, the roof is almost always the problem. Glass and polycarbonate roofs have almost no insulation value. A warm roof — insulated decking with tiles or slates — changes the room completely.
The build-up is straightforward. We remove the existing roof, install Kingspan or similar insulation between the joists, lay a ply deck, flash the lead into the brickwork, then finish with tiles or slates to match the existing roof. Skylights go in before the tiles go on. The whole process typically takes 2–4 days, depending on size.
Costs vary. A standard 3×3 metre conservatory warm roof conversion typically runs £5,000–£8,000 including materials and labour. That's a fraction of the cost of a full extension and doesn't require planning permission in most cases.
The biggest practical benefit is year-round use. A well-insulated warm roof stops the summer bake and the winter freeze. Add a couple of radiator connections or underfloor heating, and the room becomes part of the house rather than a storage area for plants.
